There are many health institutions in Taiwan where people can get high quality medical service. But if you are looking for the best, we’ve done some research and made a list of the country’s top-performing hospitals. These include hospitals located in different parts of Taiwan, including Taipei, Taoyuan, Taichung, and Kaohsiung.
Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital
The first hospital on our list is Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, which is based in Guishan District, Taoyuan City. Established on December 1, 1978, it is also called “Chang Gung Memorial Hospital” or simply “Chang Gung Hospital.”
With almost 4,000 beds, the hospital is among the largest when it comes to bed capacity. Currently, the facility includes several buildings: Medical Building, Children’s Building, General Building, Pathology Building, Rehabilitation Building, and Proton Building.
Notably, the hospital is part of the Chang Gung Medical Foundation hospital network, which includes branches in Keelung, Taipei, Chiayi, and Kaohsiung. There’s also a Health and Cultural Village (for the elderly) in Taoyuan, and an overseas branch in Xiamen, China.

National Taiwan University Hospital
Founded in 1895, National Taiwan University Hospital is known for its excellent academic and research programs, aside from medical services. By 1921, the hospital had been renovated and was the biggest and most modern hospital in Southeast Asia at the time!
Initially, the hospital was based in Dadaocheng, Taipei, before being moved to its current location, which is now called “West Campus.” In 1991, the “East Campus” was completed. Together both campuses have a 2,600 bed capacity and more than 7,500 staff. Everyday, they serve 9,000 people on an outpatient basis.

Taipei Veterans General Hospital
Founded in 1958, Taipei Veterans General Hospital is another well-known health facility in Taiwan. Situated in Beitou District, it serves mostly patients from northern Taipei and New Taipei City.
Initially, the hospital began with 600 beds. Today, it has a 3,000 bed capacity, providing first-class healthcare services as well as residency programs and undergraduate medical education programs.

Mackay Memorial Hospital
Located in Zhongshan District, Taipei is one of the country’s biggest medical centers: Mackay Memorial Hospital. Founded on December 26, 1912, the facility is a private Christian Hospital named after George Leslie Mackay, a Canadian Presbyterian missionary.
Mackay had served with the Canadian Presbyterian Mission; he was the first Presbyterian missionary to northern Taiwan. To this day, he is regarded as one of the most influential and well-known Westerners who had lived in the country.

Taichung Veterans General Hospital
Based in Xitun District, the Taichung Veterans General Hospital commenced operations on September 16, 1982. In 1991, the Taiwan government’s Department of Health recognized it as a “Medical Center and First Class Teaching Hospital.”
Currently, the hospital has a 1,634 bed capacity and about 4,700 employees. Everyday, it can handle around 9,300 outpatients, along with 200 patients in the emergency room. Other than providing health services, the hospital also conducts training programs, plus research and development programs.

China Medical University Hospital
Situated in North District, Taichung City, the China Medical University Hospital was established on November 16, 1980. Its first superintendent was Professor Ting-Fu Wang, followed by Professor Chang-Hai Tsai in 1995. Under his leadership, the had grown from a regional hospital to a medical center, to a hospital accredited by Joint Commission International (JCI), a non-profit organization that accredits medical services all over the globe.
Nowadays, the China Medical University Hospital provides top-notch health services and medical education programs, covering both Western and Chinese medicine.

National Cheng Kung University Hospital
Located in North District, Tainan City, National Cheng Kung University Hospital is the only teaching hospital in southern Taiwan that is affiliated with a national university. It opened on June 12, 1988, before getting accredited as a “Medical Center” in July 1993.
The 14-storey hospital has a 1,342 bed capacity, providing an extensive range of inpatient, outpatient, and emergency medical services. It is comprised of 34 clinical care departments, 18 administrative departments, and three allied health departments.

Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital
Similar to the Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taoyuan City, Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital is part of the Chang Gung Medical Foundation’s network of hospitals. It was established in January 1986 at Niaosong District in Kaohsiung City.
The hospital, which has a 2,680 bed capacity, is committed to delivering excellent healthcare services to the people of Kaohsiung and nearby areas. At present, it has 81 clinical departments, with more than 6,300 staff capable of attending to 7,300 outpatients and 350 emergency patients everyday.
