Just like in other countries, Taiwanese people hold certain views about tattoos, based on their culture, tradition, and preferences. And while having a tattoo is not illegal, you may have to think twice about getting “inked” or having a visible (uncovered) tattoo, since it could affect your chances when applying for a job in this country.
Why Most Employers Prefer Applicants With No Tattoos
Nowadays, tattoos are generally viewed as a form of self-expression. However, peoples’ perceptions of tattoos vary widely; some think they’re okay, while other’s don’t feel the same way. Of course, each one has a reason — and a right — to have his/her own views.

Generational Differences
Young Taiwanese are becoming more and more accepting of tattoos; in fact, there has been a rise in tattoo establishments over the past few years. However, older generations may still hold negative views. These generational differences may also play out in the work place, since most companies have older as well as younger employees.
Preference for Professional Image
In the workplace, tattoos are often viewed by clients/customers as unprofessional or — for lack of a better word — “dirty.” In contrast, employees with no visible tattoos are generally perceived as “clean,” “neutral,” or “professional.” Obviously, companies prefer to have a clean and professional image, hence the preference for workers with no visible tattoos.
Industry-based Differences
Not all companies frown over tattoos; creative industries such as performing arts, design, and entertainment are more “open” to people having tattoos. However, most companies, especially those in customer/client-oriented industries, still prefer employees with a “clean” and “professional” look. These industries include banking, government, education, healthcare, retail, and other fields.
Company Dress Code
Last, but certainly not the least… policies on tattoos depend on the company itself. Most companies follow a strict dress code that prohibits not just tattoos, but also body piercings and certain hairstyles. Some companies also require employees to wear uniforms, as part of projecting a clean and professional image.
In this day and age, getting a tattoo is often a matter of self-expression and personal choice. However, we should also consider the fact that people have different views on the matter. So whether or not we decide to have (or to cover) tattoos, the important things is for us to be respectful of everyone’s views, especially in the workplace.
