OFW Domestic Workers to Get USD 500 ( TWD16,200) Monthly Minimum Salary – DMW

A new wave of reforms from the Philippine Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) is set to benefit Filipinos seeking jobs in Taiwan’s household sector. The government has approved a minimum monthly salary increase for OFW domestic workers in Taiwan from USD 400 to USD 500 — equivalent to about TWD 16,200.

This change will take effect 60 days after issuance and will apply only to new employment contracts processed through the DMW. Current contracts remain unchanged, but Filipino domestic workers in Taiwan will still feel the impact of the reforms through new welfare and support systems.

A Raise That Recognizes Domestic Work

DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac clarified that the USD 500 salary is a starting point, not the limit. Taiwanese employers can still offer higher pay depending on a worker’s skills, experience, or ability to communicate in Mandarin or Taiwanese.

“The wage floor is meant to show that domestic work has equal value and deserves fair compensation,” Cacdac explained.

Expanded Support for Household Workers

The salary increase comes with a comprehensive package of reforms designed to improve safety, dignity, and career prospects for household workers. Key measures include:

  1. Free Annual Health Check-Ups funded by the DMW Aksyon Fund
  2. Virtual “Meet Your Employer” Calls before contracts are signed
  3. Regular “Kamusta Kabayan” Check-Ins by DMW welfare officers
  4. Higher Housing Standards for workers waiting for deployment
  5. Whitelist System for Recruitment Agencies — only compliant and ethical agencies can deploy
  6. Legal and Financial Help through the Aksyon Fund when needed

Preparing for Caregiving Demands

Taiwan’s fast-aging population has created rising demand for caregivers. To address this, the DMW is preparing to separate the classification of “domestic workers” and “caregivers.” Each will soon have its own wage rate, ensuring those tasked with caregiving are properly paid for their specialized duties.

What OFWs Should Expect in Taiwan

For those applying for new jobs in Taiwan, the USD 500 monthly salary (TWD 16,200) will be reflected in new DMW-approved contracts.

Even if you are already under contract, you can still benefit from welfare check-ins, stricter monitoring of agencies, and free access to medical and legal support.

Looking Ahead

The salary increase for OFW domestic workers in Taiwan marks an important step in securing better pay and safer working conditions for Filipinos abroad. It is also part of a broader push by the Philippine government to professionalize domestic work and provide clear paths for career growth.

Disclaimer: The wage increase applies only to new contracts processed after the effectivity date. For official details, OFWs in Taiwan are encouraged to coordinate with the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) in Taipei or Kaohsiung.
