DOs and DON’Ts When Commuting to Work in Taiwan

Taiwan has an advanced public transportation system that makes it easy to get around. There are buses and trains operating within (and between) cities and towns. So whether you’re commuting to work or other places, you can choose from many transport options.

To help ensure a safe, convenient, and orderly travel experience for everyone, the country’s transport systems strictly enforce a set of rules and regulations for commuters. In this article, we will focus on the do’s and don’ts of riding public buses and trains in Taiwan.

Public Transportation Etiquette in Taiwan

What makes a “good passenger”? Here is an overview of do’s and don’ts that every commuter in the country should know, especially when taking a public bus or train.

Taking a Bus

  • DO… Make sure you have coins or a smartcard (such as EasyCard) to pay for your fare before getting on the bus.
  • DO… Arrive at the bus stop early. When you see the bus approaching, signal to the driver to stop so you can get on.
  • DO… Line up properly if there are many of you who are waiting to board the bus.
  • DO… Wait patiently for those on the bus to disembark before you get on.
  • DON’T… Take up too much space by placing your bags on other seats, as this prevents other people from sitting down.

Taking a Train

  • DO… Stand behind the yellow line while waiting for the train. This line is designed for everyone’s safety.
  • DO… Wait for other passengers to disembark before you board the train. This way, everyone is able to get on/off in an orderly manner.
  • DO… Hold on to the straps or handrails while the train is moving, to ensure your safety.
  • DO… Wear a face mask if you have a cough, cold, or if you’re feeling unwell.
  • DON’T… Lean on the door while the train is moving. This could put you in danger when the door suddenly opens and closes.
  • DON’T… Stand in the area between train carriages. This could block the movement of passengers who are moving between carriages and put you in danger, as well.
  • DON’T… Eat, drink, chew gum, or smoke inside the train or in the stations. Keep your food and drinks inside your bag.

Additional Reminders

Aside from the above, here are some more important reminders for those who regularly ride a bus or train:

  • DO… Offer your seat to the elderly, pregnant women, persons with disabilities, and women with young children.
  • DO… Keep quiet to maintain a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere.
  • DO… Put on your phone on silent mode. If you need to take a call, speak softly and keep your conversation short. Better yet, send a text message instead.
  • DON’T… Talk loudly, shout, or engage in “horseplay” while commuting. Keep in mind that actions that disturb others in a public place could lead to a fine.
  • DON’T… Talk or chat with the driver unless necessary, since it could affect his/her concentration on the road.
  • DON’T… Push or engage in behavior that compromises yours and other people’s safety.
